As products and services powered by Generative AI become increasingly customized and personalized, we believe that now is the right time to discuss emerging industry approaches to building these experiences. We need to consider the complex interplay between emerging technology, people’s needs, and societal implications.

As part of a multi-year collaborative effort, Meta’s Trust, Transparency & Control Labs (TTC Labs) is hosting a series of Design Jams - interactive workshops bringing together multidisciplinary experts from government, academia, civil society and industry - to explore the value, opportunities and challenges of personalized Gen AI experiences.

Since 2018, TTC Labs has conducted co-design consultation and research with hundreds of experts on the theme of trustworthy AI experiences to inform Meta’s AI policy and product development, and contribute to industry conversation.

The current series of Design Jams on personalized GenAI explores design considerations for transparency and control solutions including privacy and data use education, notification and settings. We’re exploring how we might support people and help build agency over the continued development of personalized AI assistants on industry-wide use cases.

AI assistants are already helping people to shop, learn, get specialized advice, communicate effectively, and coordinate plans. Increasingly more personalized AI assistants will help create information, recommendations and support in ways that are most relevant to people. They will also begin to anticipate people’s unique needs, reduce the number of steps that people need to take to achieve their goals, and execute actions on their behalf in ways that create a sense of connection and represent people authentically.

Personalized AI experiences with the capability for long-term memory will be a key part of upcoming technology developments here. By providing a more relevant, efficient and human-like experience, personalized AI assistants will help people feel more informed, organized and confident.

Meta believes it’s vital to work collaboratively across industry, government, academia and civil society in order to realize the promise of personalized AI experiences responsibly. This TTC Labs project complements other multistakeholder efforts by Meta in the space of AI governance like Open Loop and the Community Forums.

As this current project develops, we will endeavour to share insights and actions with the external community.
